ADNOC Drilling puts the first AI-enabled, fully automated “walking” island rig into service — three months early
ADNOC Drilling accepted AD-300, the first of six next-generation island rigs under a $1.54 billion offshore contract, nearly three months ahead of schedule. Standing 50 m tall and weighing roughly 2,000 t, the rig pairs automated pipe handling, AI-enabled monitoring and hybrid power with an automated walking capability that moves it between wells on ADNOC’s artificial islands without dismantling. AD-301 is already deploying; the rest of the fleet rolls out through 2027.
This is automation crossing from the pilot deck to the contract fleet. The headline isn’t the robotics — it’s that an operator booked early revenue because an automated rig was ready ahead of plan, and pulled people out of the highest-exposure tasks while doing it. Predictable, sensor-instrumented rigs are becoming the procurement default, not the science project.
