U.S. rig count rises to 595 for the week ending September 18
Baker Hughes’ weekly count showed 595 active U.S. rigs for the week ending September 18, 2026, up 4 from the prior week and up 53 from a year earlier. The oil count was 452, up 2 on the week, and the gas count was 134, up 2 on the week.
In Canada the total was 197, down 10 week on week and up 8 year on year. The SteelOrbis report does not give year-on-year changes for the U.S. oil and gas counts, so none are quoted here.
More rigs turning means more wells drilled at the same time, and each one is a place where an early signal of trouble either gets caught or does not. Higher activity raises the number of wells exposed to kicks, stuck pipe and lost circulation, so the value of detecting a deviation early scales with the rig count, not just with the well.
